Language study reaps lots of benefits

Updated: Mar 3

I grew up bilingual not by choice but because my parents and grandparents believed that having a 2nd (or 3rd) language would benefit my sisters and I in the future. Plus, my grandparents, who lived with us, did not understand English. Throughout my teaching career, I have been a sort of salesperson for 2nd Language acquisition.

Half of the world population is bilingual, but only 25% of Americans can hold a conversation in another language. Here are seven of the best reasons for America's youth to speak a language besides English (and more than 2 ) if possible:

  2. Boosts academic achievement

  3. Provides professional and career advantages

  4. Provides broader access to education and information

  5. Gives you more social and global skills

  6. Increases national security

  7. Life is more interesting
